Snapchat was the last chip to fall.
Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter, and now Snapchat are all run by an algorithm. An
algorithm dictates what you see and when you see it. Social media can
and will control how you feel.
“Mirror, Mirror, on the wall… Who’s the fairest of them all?”
You will be asking this question and the answer will always return “you”.
Snapchat,
by simply making you look better, is making you engage with the app.
You want to feel pretty and want to believe your skin is flawless so you
take a picture with a Snapchat Lens.
Instagram
became popular because it made your not-so-great photos look better
with a filter and promoted this idea of posting the best picture of
yourself.
Facebook, while claiming they are
not, is an echo chamber by nature. If Facebook knows your political
identity, they will show you ads based on that knowledge. You will see
ads for things you like and things that make you feel better. Overall,
you are in a giant echo chamber making you feel good about your
decisions.
Fake news is popular because it can credit your ideas.
If you hate liberals (which Facebook knows), they'll show you an article like Proof Liberals Live in an Echo Chamber » No human is showing you this. AI is because AI was given the command “make people happy” and “make them engage more”.
When
everything is run by an algorithm, you only see ideas you find
favorable because AI wants you to engage more. Showing you news you like
and going as far as fake news increases your engagement.
Facebook uses algorithms to make you click on fake news and news which makes you happy.
Twitter uses algorithms to make you see posts that you find favorable and will like.
Snapchat uses algorithms to make you see stories and certain people on your Friend’s list.
All of this keeps people more engaged meaning they see more ads. Meaning the company makes more money.
→ What is the future of social media?
The future of social media is seeing exactly what you want to see curated by an algorithm. You will only see your truth. Never the truth.
