Things that every entrepreneur should know, but that nobody teaches, when starting their first business

1 - You will work more than you ever thought you would.
Oh how I miss some of my 40-hour work weeks… That was so little work and so much freedom.
You didn’t have to worry about anything at all. It was all taken care of and you only had to work 40 hours every week… How easy!
You will work more than in any other job, especially at the beginning and especially if you want to succeed.
Know that this is not an easy task. Most people are not ready to be entrepreneurs because they are not willing to put in the time and work that is required of them.
Starting your own business, becoming an entrepreneur and succeeding with it is a lot of hard work. It’s a test of will and you will have to do far more than you can imagine right now.
If you are not ready for this, then do not start your own business.

2 - It takes far longer than you think it will.
Think about how long it would take to make a business go even and then to make it go successful. How long do you think it will take?
I want you to write down a date right now for both of them. If you started now, by when do you think your business would go even? By when do you think you would be successful?
Be generous with the time you think it takes.
And then, once you have written down a date, double it.
Now you have a relatively tight plan on when you might achieve it. Chances are it will take you even longer than that working longer weeks than most people.
Like I said, this is a test of will. If you cannot imagine working 100 hour weeks for twice as long as you think it will take then you do not have the mental fortitude for this line of work.

3 - You will not love it all.
Oh the days to come where you will hate the work. Oh the days where you will wish you didn’t start your own business. Oh the days where you realize that this isn’t what you thought it would be.
Starting entrepreneurs believe that their motivation and love for their business will make their work time seem like play time and that is why they can work 100 hour weeks with no problem at all, but, the truth is that it is not that easy.
The truth is you will still have days where you loathe the work and days where you do not look forward to any of it. There will times you will regret your choices and times where you wish you would have taken an easier route.
What keeps the entrepreneurs going in those days is not the love for what they are doing, but their immense desire for seeing it through!
When you look at professional swimmers, for example, most will tell you that they do not enjoy their practice! Yet they will still spend 6–8 hours a day practicing and swimming.
Most will swim around the world a couple times throughout practice, all to perform well during those 50 seconds at the tournament.
But those 50 seconds, to them, are worth all the previous struggle.
You will not love all the work, all the practicing and all the work, but if you really want it, if you have a passion for what you do regardless of those days, then you will make it through!

4 - You will have to sacrifice a lot.
Just think about it: You have to work a lot of 100 hour weeks… that doesn’t leave much time for anything else.
If you sleep 7 hours a day, you have about 19 hours left throughout the whole week to spend time with friends, eat, shower, and on your hobbies.
You will not be able to do it all; sacrifices will have to be made.
There will be plenty of nights where you have to say “No” to your friends and plenty of times where you have to refrain from watching a movie or playing games because you still have work to do.
You will lose some friends and you will not have time for all your hobbies. That is not a warning but a fact.

The question that you are probably asking yourself at this point is: “Why do it at all? With so much crap happening and so many negative things, why become an entrepreneur and start a business?”
The answer to that question is quite simple: I have no clue.
I have no idea why you should do it, and, if you are looking for a reason to do it, I suggest not doing it at all.
The reasons for starting a business always vary, but the ones that end up succeeding in their business are the ones that are driven by a cause that, to them, is greater than anything else.
These people will easily do 100 hour weeks without a second thought and sacrifice almost everything in order to succeed on their mission. They are so passionate that they can barely be stopped.
If you can look at the 4 things above and still say that your reason for starting your business is greater or more worth it than those negatives, then hold onto that reason and dive in.
If not, then I suggest finding a different path. Remember, this is not for everyone.
